Williams, J.H.

In 1882, James Harvey Williams and Matthew Diamond founded Williams & Diamond in Flushing, Queens, a drop forging business. The business was relocated to Brooklyn in 1884 and took the name J.H. Williams & Co in 1887. The company was incorporated in 1885.  At some point between 1884 and 1886, William H. Brock joined Mr. Williams in partnership.  This partnership didn't last long with Mr. Brock suing Mr. Williams for breach of their agreement.  The resolution of the conflict is undetermined but in January of 1887, Mr. Brock bows out of the partnership and the firm continues as J. H. Williams & Co.  NOTE: Mr. Brock may well have been with the company since the early 1880s.  He had 2 pipe/chain wrench patents (250,641 and 254,862 the latter assigned 1/4 to John W. Alexander) in 1881 and 1882 that DATAMP reports were manufactured by J. H. Williams and William H. Brock.  In 1901, Mr. Brock patented another Chain Wrench design, Patent #674,194, and in May of 1900, founded the Brock Wrench Manufacturing Co..  In 1902 the company is listed Polk's New York Copartnership and Corporation Directory in NJ with William C. Latimer - Pres., Daniel A. Lowber - Sec., and William H. Brock - Treas.  In 1915 Jos. C. Pierson retired as President of Brock Wrench and the company was acquired by Greene, Tweed & Co.  Brock Wrench is still listed in manufacturer's directories until 1923.

J. H. Williams was one of the first to offer mass-produced drop-forged hand tools. A second factory was opened in Buffalo, New York in 1914 (now the site of General Motors' Tonawanda Engine plant).

In 1920, Williams merged with the Whitman & Barnes company

In the mid 1930s, Foster A. Haist (former President of Keystone Manufacturing Co.) was assigning patents to J. H. Williams.

In approximately 1936, the United Drill and Tool Corporation was established as an "umbrella entity."  Williams and W&B continued to produce tools under their respective brands, and other companies such as the Buckeye Twist Drill Co., Chicago-Latrobe, and Unimet Carbide were acquired under United Drill and Tool Corp.

In late November of 1957 (See Image 1 below), the boards of United Drill and Tool and Greenfield Tap & Die agreed in principle to merge.  By March of 1958, the merger was complete and a new entity, Unified-Greenfield Corp. was formalized.  Again, Greenfield, Williams etc. continued to produce products under their traditional branding.
